Picture of A Place in Japan

Background Information about Japan :

Position: Island country in East Asia

Population: 125.7 billion

Area: 377,975 km²

Q : What do you think are the appealing points of Japan?

A : I think it is attractive that people value the sensation of season. There are traditional festivals based on season in Japan, such as the cherry-blossom viewing called “Hanami” in Japanese. I like that people are also enjoy hot summers and cold winters. Also, having seasonal foods are great, foods like chestnut rice.

Q : Do you have any recommendations for Japanese food?

A : I want to introduce “Saikyo-yaki” (It is the way to grill something such as sea bream and cod soaked with sweet miso). Also, rice with whole steamed sea bream is delicious!

Q : Do you have a place you want people from other countries to visit in Japan?

A : I think Kyoto is the best place to visit because it displays Japanese culture like traditional buildings and world heritage. Also, you can feel something familiar to traditional crafts, so I think Kyoto is representing the true nature.

Q : What do you think is the difference between Japan and UK? If there are any

A : I think Japanese people often sense the feeling of other people and tend to not give their opinion clearly while talking, they also tend to just care about their own businesses. On the other hand, people here say what they are thinking explicitly and are very open to conversations with strangers. In almost every Asian country, like Japan, children were taught to never talk to strangers and so I was kind of taken aback when people here were so friendly with people they just met on the bus, or on the train, or even in the convenient store.

Q : What do you think is the good thing about going to the UK to study?

A : I was surprised that there are societies based on what they want. For example, in Japan, when I wanted to join some music club, there was only music brass band club and almost everyone were woman, so I was amazed by the number of men when I entered music society. I think it is great that everyone can do as they wish and be truly passionate about what they want.
