As UEA has been ranked in the world's top 100 in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2023 - a prestigious new international ranking table, we ask what do you do in your daily lives to support sustainability?
Today, Climate Change and environmental problems around the world are so enormous that we can’t continue to ignore them. You may already recycle or buy sustainable products. However, there are still many things you can do to help and we wanted to share a few ideas.
Sustainable living by using cloth bags instead of plastic bags
1. Always recycle and reduce your waste in the green recycling bins provided around INTO UEA centre
2.Find out about some of the schemes which prevent food waste. For instance, ‘Too Good to Go: End Food Waste’ highlights your neighbourhood stores or restaurants which still have unsold food. Then, you can buy unwanted food at a really good discounted price. Another app would be ‘Food Cloud’. It connects supermarkets with charities such as homeless shelters. If you work at a supermarket, you could ask the manager to sign up for it, so that the unsold food could be collected by charity groups.
3. Another solution is looking for a Fair Trade mark on products you buy. This means that a larger percentage of the money you pay for something goes back into the community which produces the goods. This also prevents a large percentage of the profits being taken by large corporations. Merchandises with the Fairtrade mark / sticker meets the standards of ‘Fairtrade’. To be able to participate in this movement, please do check whether there is the Fairtrade sign on the food or clothes when you go shopping.

4. You can also buy clothes and other items from many of the charity shops in Norwich. Some of the examples are: Oxfam, SCOPE, NANSA and Relate. Look up where the charity shops are based and then pop in to find some real bargains!
5. National Buy Nothing Day is held on 26th November is a campaign to reduce waste where you try not to buy any clothes or other items for the entire day. Details can be found here
Just like these examples, there are many ways you can help to tackle our environment issues. So come on, turn on your smartphone, search up information about sustainable living, and come join us in saving our beloved planet earth, little by little.
